The west coast of Sweden is renowned for its sailing, fishing villages and the smooth, rocky coastline and islands. What is so special about this archipelago is the unusual natural environment and all the fishing villages scattered along the coast. A sailing holiday in this area allows you to visit all the picturesque fishing villages with an enormous range of restaurants with fresh seafood, excellent shopping and a genuine archipelago culture. The Stockholm Archipelago stretches from Stockholm to about 60 km to the east, bordering Åland. It consists of approximately 24,000 islands and islets, perfect to explore on a sailing holiday. Today the archipelago is a popular holiday destination with some 50,000 holiday cottages (owned mainly by Stockholmers) and yacht charter is an extremely popular activity. Some of the communities on these islands are virtually suburbs of Stockholm, and many residents commute into the city daily.
Start your yacht charter at Saltsjöbaden, a seaside resort just 15km southeast of Stockholm. Visit the larger islands in the central archipelago, Möja, Runmarö and Nämdö. Right of the edge of the archipelago is Sandhamn, one of the area´s most popular spots, with a hotel, restaurants and excellent beaches. Other well known islands to discover on your sailing holiday are: Dalarö, Finnhamn, Grinda, Husarö, Ingarö, Isö, Ljusterö, Nämndö, Rödlöga, Tynninge, Utö, Svartsö and Värmdö.
Short sailing season with the peak period from end of June to mid August with long daylight hours and warm sunshine. Temperates in the summer months are 20-25C or warmer. Winds are fairly light but can be changeable between the islands. During the summer months, July and August, the sea is warm enough for swimming.
