Bavaria 44 Malta Malta

Malta has been the centre of seafaring activity in the Mediterranean for over 1000 years.

Birgu is the foremost maritime city of Malta which has been the centre of seafaring activity on the island for over 1000 years. In the Middle Ages, the harbour provided a safe haven for merchant sailors from around the Mediterranean, all under the protection of the castle built on the Birgu promontory.

Where can I sail in Malta?

Birgu       Yacht charter prices

Start your yacht charter from the Grand Harbour Marina at Birgu, an ultra-modern marina in this beautiful old harbour. Birgu waterfront is made up of buildings associated with the Crusader Knights of St John. Fort St Angelo still stands proudly at the entrance to Dockyard Creek, witness to nearly one thousand years of history and numerous battles. The old naval bakery today hosts the Malta Maritime Museum and in the narrow and winding streets of the walled town one can stumble across architectural gems such as the Inquisitor’s Palace.

Ideal for a relaxed sailing holiday, you can sail round Malta and visit the three islands of Gozo, Comino and Cominotto with their pristine beaches and caves. Gozo is the second biggest island full of character and charm. Use the marina at Mgarr Harbour or anchor off one of the beaches. Quiet compared to Malta, Gozo definitely is worth a visit ashore. Comino is excellent for swimming in the famous blue lagoon which provides excellent shelter for anchoring at night. From here you can sail round the Maltese Islands returning for an evening dip in the pristine waters of the lagoon.

With the islands so close to Malta, you may want to combine a yacht charter with time ashore to visit the historic sights of Malta. In two weeks you could extend your sailing holiday to visit Sicily, some 60nm west of Gozo.
