Join a flotilla sailing holiday if you want to sail your own yacht with the added support of a lead boat crew.

A flotilla is a group of yachts sailing in company accompanied by a flotilla skipper on the lead yacht. You have virtually all the advantages of independent cruising, plus the support of experienced help if you need it. You're the skipper of your own yacht, and each day's activities are yours to decide - you can sail hard, or simply idle towards the next port soaking up the sun on the way.

Less experienced skippers appreciate the help, advice and support for the flotilla skipper. More experienced skippers join a flotilla holiday for the social side. It's a popular choice for couples, friends and families.

During school holidays there are usually other families on the flotillas. Children and teenagers love flotilla sailing holidays- there is plenty going on afloat and ashore. And the constant thrill of new destinations means there's lots of exploring to be done.

What level of sailing experience is required?

No qualifications are required for flotilla sailing holidays in Greece and Turkey but to skipper your own yacht on flotilla you should have some previous skippering experience, either from a previous flotilla holiday or from yacht sailing in the UK. At least one other person should be competent crew standard.

To charter a yacht in Croatia the skipper must have RYA Day Skipper Practical certficate or RYA ICC qualification.

The Greece flotillas in the Ionian and Saronic are suitable for less experienced skippers and are perfect for a relaxed sailing holiday.  The flotilla from Skiathos is a great step up from the Saronic.

The Croatia flotilla and the Turkey flotilla from Fethiye require more experience. The flotilla from Bodrum in Turkey offers more challenging sailing, with stronger winds and longer passages - great for building your confidence for future bareboat charters.
